Door knocker with backplate

 

Central Europe, first half of 17th century

 

Malleable iron. Square bar handle curled into a snake; another bar has been welded on to serve as the hammer. A centre rosette of two grooved ribbons is riveted to the handle. The snake’s body arches around the mount, which is attached to the backplate. Decorated with grooving.
